Continuous Professional Development is required, per statutory regulation, for all professionals such as counsellors, psychologists, medical practitioners and nurses, social workers, religious workers and teachers. CPD training is compulsory and the obligation as set out in the NQF policy (Act 67 of 2008) determines that a professional body shall “set criteria for, promote and monitor continuous professional development for its members to meet relevant professional designation requirements.” Accordingly the ASCHP offers CPD training to help its members stay up to date with professional requirements, latest research and amendments to the applicable acts. The number of CPD points that a member has to complete per annum depends on the category of registration.
Please note– The following CPD rules apply:
- Members are expected to complete the prescribed number of CPD’s per the requirement of their respective categories. One CPD point equals one hour of study.
- CPD’s are not training programmes but professional development. Members who are enrolled for accredited training programmes, may apply for exemption of CPD training.
- Members are welcome to complete accredited CPD points at other institutions and then apply for recognition of external CPD’s to be registered at the ASCHP against your name. (R15 per point).
- Half of the CPD’s required for you to be done per your category must, however, be done at the ASCHP (Synergetica CPD provider). Ethics CPD’s are compulsory because it covers material relevant to own scope of practice.
- CPD’s should be relevant to counselling and coaching content, practice and theory.
- Only CPD’s completed at other recognized professional bodies are acceptable, or bodies registered for this purpose at the ASCHP as CPD provider.
- It is the responsibility of each member to ensure that his/her CPD points are registered at the ASCHP in order to comply with membership requirements.
- Members who fail to comply with CPD requirements risk suspension of membership. An audit is done when application for membership renewal is done.
- Members are requested to encourage CPD providers to register their CPD training at the ASCHP in order to comply with quality management.
CPD requirements for CCSA/NHA & ASCHP members
Example: One point is equal to 1 notional hour of study/training. This means that a 3 hour seminar can provide 3 CPD points for which a CPD certificate will be issued. 3 Ethics CPD points are always compulsory. The total minimum number of CPD’s has been determined as follows:

The CPD training is administered by the Liedani CPD Services and certified by the Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners (SAQA registration ID 984) with registered designations on the NQF.
Terms and Conditions
Only CPD programmes offered by or approved by the CCSA/NHA & ASCHP will be accepted. Upon completion it remains the responsibility of the member to ensure that a copy of the CPD certificate is either e-mailed or faxed to the CCSA/NHA & ASCHP in order to register it against your name and CCSA/NHA & ASCHP registration number. Failing to complete or submit the required CPD points per annum may lead to suspension of membership until compliance is met.
Candidates who are enrolled for any relevant qualifications (other than a degree course) may apply for level 2 CPD (application form available from the office). A fee of R45 per CPD point is payable to place it on record. This exemption from CPD’s apply for the normal period of training for a recognized degree course upon submitting proof of such registration.
Candidates who complete acceptable CPD training elsewhere may apply for the recognition of such external/informal CPD’s (form available from the office). These CPD’s may include training offered by other recognized professional bodies (PB’s) such as the Social Services Professional Board. The cost for recognition of PB registered CPD’s amounts to R15 per point and that for informal (unregistered CPD’s) amounts to R45.
The association believes that counsellors will commit themselves to meeting the requirement for continuing development in the assurance that both they and their clients will enjoy the benefits of on-going learning, as well as continuous personal and professional development. The strategy for CPD training is consistent with the philosophy of lifelong learning.
CPD TRAINING COSTS AND COMPLETION OF THE WORK
The cost amounts to R150 per CPD point. The CPD’s are normally offered in units of three points per sessions (i.e. a three hour session) which amounts to 3 X R150 = R450. Units of 1 and 2 CPD’s are also available. Members pay for the CPD upon order and will receive the training material plus assignment to be completed. Assignments can be mailed or e-mailed to the Liedani CPD Services office to be marked. The CPD certificate is issued within 1 week after submission. Members who attend training sessions will be assessed in class according to a specified schedule overseen by the group leader.
CPD OPTIONS FOR TRAINING
- Distance training option: Candidates enrol via e-mail and receive their training material with an assignment that needs to be completed. The assignment is emailed or mailed in hard copy to the CCSA/NHA & ASCHP office to be marked. A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion.
- Class attendance option: This option is open to any qualified member who wants to conduct a workshop or discussion group for the CPD’s. A wide variety of CPD themes are available from our CPD bank for which members can enrol. Candidates may then be invited to attend the classes offered in their region and will be assessed in class by the group (group assessment). No assignments are required in the case of class attendance. NB. A group must, for this purpose, consist of at least five members. Additional costs may apply for cost of the venue and refreshments.
Candidates will obtain their CPD training material from the Liedani CPD Services office as usual and attend the scheduled class on the dates determined by the group leader who organizes the sessions. The requirement for applying to present such a workshop or discussion group is open to any person with a relevant B degree or higher qualification. Please apply by filling in the form: Application to facilitate a group discussion. All the rules and regulations are specified on the form to be obtained from the Liedani CPD Services office.
CPD PROVIDER AND FACILITATOR
The ASCHP makes provision for facilitated CPD training with the support of CPD providers and CPF facilitators.
The CPD provider registers quality CPD with the ASCHP to present to ASCHP members. Members who successfully complete the training, may apply for the registration of these external CPD points at a minimal fee.
CPD facilitators do not present their own CPD training, but simply provides class attendance to members to do workshops in working through the ASCHP CPD material. The attendees are required to pay additional fees to cover the cost of the venue, tea and refreshments and fees that the facilitator may additionally charge.
The mechanism and strategies are explained below.
RULES AND REGULATIONS GOVERNING CPD FACILITATION
The normal method of completing CPD’s remain that of distance education where members submit prescribed assignments. This makes it possible for them to work at own pace and have access to CPD training irrespective of where they are residing.
In addition workshops may be offered wherever members have the need to self-organize such opportunities. For this reason … the Board for the Affiliation of Counselling Associations (BACA) confirms with this opportunity its confidence in its members to facilitate CPD training on behalf of professional bodies. In the past, as you may know, the professional bodies made executive members available for CPD training. Since 2017 the Board has decided to build capacity in developing the potential of its members to offer the training provided by the ASCHP. This training covers CPD training for the following professional bodies:
- The Council for Counsellors in SA (CCSA)
- The NHA (Natural Healers Association)
- The ASCHP (Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners
The facilitation process
The process is simple. Two options are available:
Option A – Distance training
- Members purchase their CPD training material from Liedani CPD Services
- A CPD bank is available with a list of all registered CPD topics – request from office.
- They receive the material plus assignments via email and can opt to do it via correspondence by completing the assignments and sending it in to be assessed. CPD certificates are issued to members upon successful completion.
Option B Workshop facilitation
- Members (including the facilitator) purchase their CPD training material from Liedani CPD Services
- They receive the material plus assignments via email
- They attend workshops where facilitation is made possible through the initiative of registered facilitators. This may offer the advantage of discussions and networking.
- The facilitator fills in the CPD Assessment and hands it to the member to sign.
- The MEMBER submits the class assessment to the Liedani CPD office for his/her certificate to be issued. Please note that it must be signed by both the facilitator and trainee.
Liedani CPD Services and the facilitator agree that:
- The appointment of a facilitator will be done by BACA and preference will be given to facilitators who have applicable post graduate qualifications. A SETA certificate in Assessment or the Facilitation of a training event will be a strong recommendation.
- Only one facilitator can be appointed per geographical area, and first come, first serve will apply.
- Facilitators’ registration will only be valid for one calendar year.
- Facilitators will be responsible to: (1) find a suitable venue (2) which will be for the cost of the attendees and to be by administered and collected by the facilitator, (3) who will conduct the workshop and pre-assessments.
- All CPD training will be certified by the ASCHP (SAQA) reg. no. 984 and that Liedani CPD Services will serve as the administrative office to handle all correspondence, dispatch of CPD training material as well as final assessments and the issue of CPD certificates.
- Only CPD’s purchased at Liedani CPD services are accepted for training purposes.
- No Photostat copies of material are allowed.
- Once a workshop is planned, the facilitator will inform Liedani CPD Services about the particulars. Liedani will then send out invitations to the members to contact the facilitator for attendance arrangements. Ample time should be provided for this. From experience we advise that at least 10 members be recruited before a commitment for costs is made. Costs could also, upon discretion of the facilitator include, apart from venue costs, refreshments (if you should decide to provide meals), and possibly reasonable compensation for the facilitation. Church buildings or schools often serve as ideal venues for this purpose.
- Since the CPD’s are available as PowerPoint programmes that can assist in visual presentation, it is advised that the facilitator also have access to such facility.
- The facilitator agrees to abide by the
Facilitators’ Ethical code:
I undertake to facilitate the CPD training in such a professional way that will express my competence in this area and illustrate my commitment and loyalty to the professional body in word and deed.
I also bind myself to facilitate the training in a manner that the name of the Association will not be compromised. This includes efficient execution of the facilitation, punctual payments of costs incurred, and every other arrangement required to fulfil this responsibility.

ASCHP CPD provider information
- CPD’s– Continuous Professional Development measured as CPD points for the purpose of professional development per NQF legislation with reference to tools and techniques, scope of practice, ethical and legal aspects of counselling.
- CPD certification– The certificate issued by the certifying body (such as the ASCHP) to indicate the title and number of CPD’s completed.
- CPD points– the number of points awarded to a member calculated as 1 point per hour of class attendance. The minimum number of points per annum that must be completed in a certain category is determined by the PB.
- Assessment: The formal evaluation of a members’ competence upon completion of the CPD attendance with reference to certain criteria as set out in the [Assessment Form]. This [Assessment form] can be obtained from the office and needs to be submitted for every application of CPD’s to be issued to a member by the ASCHP.
- CPD provider– a qualified person that intends to offer his/her own CPD training programme and wants to register it with the Professional Body for certification by that body. The CPD provider who presents his/her own CPD’s will also qualify to receive double the amount of CPD points.
- ASCHP – the name of the professional body that is registered with the South African Qualifications Authority, ID 984) with designations on the NQF (National Qualifications Framework). This could also make the CPD’s acceptable options for other professionals such as social workers and psychologists.
- Professional bodies – The ASCHP affiliated to the CCSA (Council for Counsellors in SA) and the NHA (Natural Healers Association). Although the ASCHP certifies the CPD training, the same programme is on offer for members of the other associations.
- CPD facilitator – is a member of the professional body who offers ASCHP CPDtraining to members of the association.
- Registered CPD’s – are CPD programmes developed by a CPD provider and approved by the ASCHP to be presented to its members.
The Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners (the ASCHP) is proud to serve as professional body (PB) for counsellors in SA who work on primary health care level. This professional body was recently registered at the South African Qualifications Framework – a statutory body for the implementation of the NQF (SAQA ID 984). The ASCHP provides a much necessary regulatory framework for counsellors in SA Africa with reference to professional guidelines and ethical code.
This means that member registrations and CPD records are open to regular SAQA audits which requires that it must be precise, correct and up to date. Membership info is loaded onto the NLRD for statistical purposes. The benefit of a PB is, in the words of Joe Samuels (SAQA CEO) that:
“ The recognition of a PB will contribute to strengthening social responsiveness and accountability within the professions and promoting pride in association for all profession.”
There is a vast need for counsellors to assist and support people in need. We define counselling as that of entering into a helping relationship with people in need.
The following designations are now registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF Act 69 of 2008)
- Supportive Counsellors– who work as helpers in counselling settings and are qualified as counsellors on at least NQF level 4. They normally work under supervision in an institutional setting such as a church, school, clinic or hospital, police station as trauma counsellors and similar settings.
- Holistic Counsellors– who practice integrative counselling and are qualified at least on NQF level 5 and 6.
- Wellness Counsellor – who work using a systems approach to counselling and are qualified as counsellors on at least NQF level 7.
- Specialist Wellness Counsellor – who work using a systems approach to counselling and are qualified as counsellors on at least NQF level 8+.
Holistic Counsellors …are counsellors who work in an integrative counselling setting. They follow a comprehensive approach to minister to the total person – body, soul and spirit.
This is in line with WHO policies that define health as a positive state of physical, psychological, social and spiritual wellbeing.
The objective of the professionalization of the counselling profession include:
- The promotion of public understanding of, and trust in, the counselling profession.
- To promote pride in association for all professions
- Encourage social responsibility and accountability with the counselling profession relating to professional services communities and individuals.
- Promote the protection of the public from malpractice related to the fulfilment of the professional duties and responsibilities
- Encourage international leading practice and raising of esteem for the counselling profession
- Facilitate access to, and analysis of data related to professions
- Support the development of a national career advice system
NQF policy requires that all health professionals must comply with continuous professional development.
Professional bodies determine the amount of CPD’s required for professional members. The annual number of CPD points is determined by your category of registration. The ASCHP
The value is that it keeps you as practitioner up to date with the counselling tools and techniques, and informs members of the latest research and legislation. All members are required to complete a certain number of CPD points per annum in order to maintain membership status.
- Supportive counsellors are obliged to complete 6 CPD’s per annum.
- Holistic Counsellors are obliged to complete 12 CPD’s per annum.
- Wellness Counsellors are obliged to complete 18 CPD’s per annum.
- Specialist Wellness Counsellors are obliged to complete 18 CPD’s per annum.
One CPD point is equal to 1 hour of CPD training, either in class attendance or by completing a prescribed assignment based on the learning material.
As SAQA registered PB only CPD’s offered or approved by a recognized CPD provider or a registered professional body will be accepted for CPD purposes.
They are normally offered in blocks of 3 CPD’s per training session.
Process of application for CPD certificates:
- Upon completion the provider will apply at the ASCHP for the CPD certificates to be issued.
- The procedure is to submit the [ASCHP CPD assessment form]that includes the personal details and copy of ID per candidate. Please request the forms from the office.
- The prescribed amount per application must accompany the applications (see [Table of Fees] attached).
- The CPD certificates will be directly issued to the candidate within seven days upon submission and in meeting all the admin requirements.
- Candidates who successfully complete CPD training, will receive a CPD certificate from the ASCHP stating the following: CPD topic, date and number of points.
Recognition of external CPD’s. Candidates who complete CPD training at other accredited CPD (such as social services professional body) providers than the ASCHP, may apply for recognition of external CPD’s on the application form that is provided for this purpose. A fee of R15 per CPD point is payable for recognition of the CPD’s.
Registration of CPD’s. Every member of the ASCHP is responsible to see to it that his/her CPD training is registered on the system at the ASCHP office. Annual audits are being done to ensure that members comply with this stipulation.
Exemption. Members who submit proof of their enrolment at an accredited training provider for academic studies with the objective of obtaining a relevant qualification in counselling, may apply for exemption from CPD training for the normal period of study. Bachelor is four years from day of enrolment, an M/PhD degree is two years.
Calculation of CPD’s for new members. New members will only be required to complete the number of CPD points for the remainder of the year since date of their first registration. This means that Supportive Counsellors who do 6 CPD’s per annum, will need to complete 1 CPD point for every two months since day of registration to the end of December of that year. Holistic Counsellors are required to do 1 CPD point for every month left since date of registration as member till 31st December.
Example. Bill Brown registers as Supportive Counsellor on 14 June. We count from July (full month) to December which amounts to 6 months. Divided by 2, means that he now only has to complete 3 CPD’s before the end of that year. Sue Green registers as Holistic Practitioner in October and we count November and December which gives 2 months. She only has to do 2 CPD’s before the end of the year.
CPD training options:
Residential – This means class attendance of a workshop offered by a registered CPD provider. The advantage of class attendance is that attendees are normally assessed in class and hence do not have to complete assignments required by those members who do the distance training (unless the CPD programme requires practical work). ASCHP Workshops: In certain areas facilitators may apply for registration to offer ASCHP CPD’s at workshops.
Via correspondence – The ASCHP also provides CPD training to its members. A CPD bank is available and the list of available CPD’s can be obtained at the office. Candidates may then order any available CPD programme via internet (or mail) to work through it and do the prescribed assignments. The assignment can then be either faxed, emailed or posted to be marked.
CPD training cost. The ACHP can make a recommendation for fee structures but do not specify or control what private CPD providers charge. The current cost for ASCHP amounts to R450 per block of 3 CPD’s. Residential candidates may be required to pay additional fees to cover facilitators costs and refreshments and venue costs.

Any qualified counsellor/psychologist may apply to become a CPD provider for the ASCHP.
- At least a relevant Bachelor qualification such as Psychology or Health Care, but preference will be given to candidates with post graduate qualifications;
- Preferably be registered as an assessor or trainer
- The availability of a venue (and catering) at own cost
- Access to a printer to have material printed at own cost
Applicants may apply on the pro-forma application form [Application to become an ASCHP registered CPD provider] available from the ASCHP office. In terms of such an agreement the following applies:
Accreditation. In order to ensure that high standards are maintained on professionally acceptable levels only CPD’s accredited by a recognized professional body will be accepted from 2017. A recognized professional body is an applicable association registered at a statutory body such as SAQA or the HPCSA. This includes, apart from ASCHP registered facilitators) also CPD’s offered by CPD providers registered for this purpose at the professional boards for psychologists and social workers. In this case they do not require ASCHP registration.
The accreditation process of CPD’s requires submission of the training programme together with the resume of the CPD provider that will be presenting it. A) The provider will be registered by the ASCHP and B) the programme will also be accredited for CPD purposes. The provider registration is a once-off registration. A specific programme, once it is accredited, can be offered for unlimited cycles. However, every new programme needs to be registered at the ASCHP before it can be offered for certification. No CPD training will be accepted by the ASCHP if it is not registered at a PB.
- CPD PROVIDERS PRESENTING EXTERNAL (THEIR OWN) PROGRAMME
- CPD providers wishing to present their own CPD programmes, may apply for it by submitting the programme along with the resume of the facilitator (see registration form for requirements). A prescribed cost is payable – see fee TABLE
- The facilitator will procure his/her own venue and make all the arrangement for the CPD seminar and will be responsible for all costs incurred.
- Make the list of attendees available plus assessments, within 24 hours after completion of the training, and pay the prescribed fees per candidate (fee TABLE) to the ASCHP to issue the CPD certificates.
- (1) The ASCHP will advertise the CPD’s via sms’s or emails or per website programmes and refer members in that area to the CPD training, and (2) issue the CPD certificate for every member attending, and (3) moderate the training.
Notes. Once a programme is registered, a facilitator may offer that programme in repetitive cycles providing that it is presented by the same lecturer. The criteria that a programme must meet for registration include:
- Professional standard. The content and presentation must be of such a nature that it will do justice to the profession;
- The content must be relevant, up to date, include the necessary references to research resources.
- The venue and training material must meet professional standards.
The facilitator will also be registered at the ASCHP and receive a certificate of registration. In the case where a facilitator has for two years been inactive in not offering any CPD training, the facilitator will be deregistered.

When the venue is close to amenities, members can provide for their own lunch. Tea is provided during tea breaks after every 45 minutes by the venue.
Affiliation of Associations
The ASCHP as professional body belongs to the affiliation that includes the CCCSA and NHA. Consequently this agreement also covers the Council for Counsellors members and the members of the Natural Healers Association.
Each of these members is required to do a different number of CPD’s per annum as follows:
- Supportive Counsellor (6 CPD’s)
- Holistic Counsellor (12 CPD’s)
- Specialist Counsellor (M or PhD degree) 18 CPD’s
- Counsellor (B or honours) 12 CPD’s
- Institutional Counsellor (less than B degree) 6 CPD’s
- Care Counsellor (basic consultant course3 CPD’s)
- Self-carer 2 CPD’s
- Assistant ECD Carer 2 CPD’s
Professional Practitioner (B degree) 18 CPD’s
Supportive Practitioners (Certificate or Diploma) 12 CPD’s

The guideline for the variety of CPD topics follow the following division:
This includes latest research in the field of either counselling or natural health care.
This includes hands on training with reference to skills and counselling techniques. Examples: narrative therapy, trauma debriefing methods, mind mapping, EFT, Logotherapy, etc.
- Ethics and legal matters
This include ethical and legal matters such as legislation, moral issues and ethical dilemmas, scope of practice, philosophy of wellbeing and an integrated and natural approach to counselling as underlying foundation, supervision, protection of the public and individual rights of members, and related matters. Members are obliged to complete the ASCHP ethical training every year.
- Personal development of the counsellor (This part can also be included in the practice part, no. 2).
This includes cross critical outcomes such as the following:
- Identify and solve problems in which responses show that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made in counselling a client within own scope of practice.
- Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community in that most counsellors at this level operate in communities and work in teams.
- Organise and manage him/herself and his/her own activities responsibly and effectively in counselling in a structured environment and writing the required reports and keeping routine records of counselling interventions according to the requirements of the work context.
- Collect, organise and critically evaluate information in screening a client to determine needs and recommend appropriate interventions.
- Communicate effectively in counselling clients.
- Use science and technology effectively in maintaining records on a database.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation in understanding the relationship between human behaviour and health and wellness in terms of short term interventions and potential long term effects.
- Reflect on and explore a variety of strategies to learn more effectively in reflecting on own practice.
- Participate as a responsible citizen in the life of local, national and global communities in counselling within a structured environment.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity across a range of counselling contexts in applying knowledge of interpersonal relationships to enhance the effectiveness of the counselling process.
Associated assessment criteria
- Communication is clear, understandable and effective and contributes to successful counselling engagements.
- Self-management skills are applied to function effectively taking into account how perception of self is informed by culture and other factors.
- Routine records and reports of counselling interventions are maintained according to the requirements of the work context.
- Counselling interventions and service users are recorded and presented in a report.
- Language use is appropriate for audience and purpose.· Appropriate relationships are established with clients.
- Interpersonal skills demonstrate sensitivity to issues of culture and diversity.
- Interpersonal relationships are managed effectively.· Counselling is in accordance with established principles, ethics and protocols for counselling.
- Counselling is appropriate to the given need and context.
- Counselling facilitates a process towards the client finding a solution.
- Recommendations for appropriate interventions are made on the basis of the screening.
- Clients are appropriately referred where necessary.
- The role and benefits of supervision are explained for own context.· The relationship between human behaviour and health and wellness is explained in terms of short term interventions and potential long term effects.
- Knowledge of the relationship between health and wellness, the community and the environment is applied to promote wellbeing.
